Is Jesus the only true God?

Updated: Apr 25

There is a group of believers who believe this is a silly question. They say, "Of course, Jesus is the only true God." There is also another group of believers who will say "Of course not, only God the Father is the only true God" and both of these groups consider themselves to be Seventh-day Adventists.

To answer this question we must consider Adam, created in the image of God.

Both the man and the woman are named Adam. For it is written: "Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created." (Genesis 5:2) While the woman is Adam in name, she is not Adam in person. Likewise, Jesus is God in name, but not God in person.

In other words, the Woman is not Adam (in person), she is the wife of Adam, and she shares the same nature as Adam. Jesus is not God (in person), He is the Son of God, and he shares the same nature as God.

For example:

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)

  • The Son of God does not have a Son to give whereas God the Father, has a Son to give

"And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." (John 17:3)

  • God the Father is God in name and person, just as Adam (the male), is Adam in name and person.

"And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him (the Father) that is true, and we are in him (the Son) that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life." (1 John 5:20)

  • Jesus Christ, the Son of God is the true God, in name but not in person.

There is only one Adam in name, both the male and female share the name.

There is only one God in name, both the Father and the Son share the name.

Here are some of my favorite verses about Jesus.

"Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;" (Titus 2:13)

"To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen." (Jude 25)

"Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour. (Isaiah 43:10-11)

  • Christ is the great God, the only Savior, the only wise God that was formed.

  • The above 3 verses do not mean that the Father is not the great God, not the Savior, not the only wise God. Those names belong to both the Father and the Son just as the name Adam belongs to both the male and the female. Thus, they were made in the image of God.
