Where did the meeting take place in the book of Job?

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them (margin: in the midst of them) . Job 1:6

'Now there was a day' - During the 7 days of feasting, Job and his 7 sons gathered together to worship the Lord. This gathering together is also known as a holy convocation.

'the sons of God' - Job and his children were the worshippers of the one true God. They were considered the Sons of God. Similarly, the children of Adam that served the Lord were also called the "sons of God". (Genesis 6:2). In addition, God's angels that are commissioned to protect his children on earth were also the sons of God. While the first group is visible to the human eye, the latter group is invisible.

'present themselves before the LORD' - Below are a few examples of how the Sons of God present themselves before the LORD:

1) And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. Leviticus 16:7

2) ... Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands. 1 Samuel 10:19

'Satan came also' - Satan came to the meeting by walking (not flying) in the earth. For it is written: "And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it." Job 1:7

'among them' (margin: in the midst of them) - Although Satan was among Job and his sons, he was not visible to Job and his sons. Below are few examples that express the similar idea:

1) For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. Matthew 18:20

2) And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. Exodus 25:8

Below are the evidences that this meeting could not have taken place in Heaven:

  1. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Luke 10:18

  2. Christ wept at Satan's woe, but told him, as the mind of God, that he could never be received into Heaven. Heaven must not be placed in jeopardy. All Heaven would be marred should he be received back; for sin and rebellion originated with him. 1 SP 29.2

  3. The controversy was not to be taken into the other worlds of the universe; but it was to be carried on in the very world, on the very same field, that Satan claimed as his. RH March 9, 1886

Similar meetings that have taken place in the Bible

  1. And he said, Hear thou therefore the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left. And the LORD said, Who shall persuade Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramothgilead? And one said on this manner, and another said on that manner. And there came forth a spirit, and stood before the LORD, and said, I will persuade him. And the LORD said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt persuade him, and prevail also: go forth, and do so. Now therefore, behold, the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and the LORD hath spoken evil concerning thee. 1 Kings 22:19-23
