No man hath seen God at any time

The True and Faithful Witness:

  • The witness of John the Baptist: "John bare witness of him, and cried, saying...No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him." {John 1:15,18}

  • The witness of John the Revelator: "No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us." {1 John 4:12}

  • The witness of Paul: "Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen" {1 Timothy 6:16}

The Testimony of Jesus, the Spirit of Prophecy

  • The testimony of Ellen White"I saw a throne, and on it sat the Father and the Son. I gazed on Jesus’ countenance and admired His lovely person. The Father's person I could not behold, for a cloud of glorious light covered Him. I asked Jesus if His Father had a form like Himself. He said He had, but I could not behold it, for said He, “If you should once behold the glory of His person, you would cease to exist.” {Early Writings 54.2}

Why no man?

Because God the Father is in heaven and no man has ascended up to heaven physically. Though Adam was created perfect, holy, sinless, and had the society of the Son of God and the heavenly angels, he did not see God face to face.

  • "And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven." {John 3:13}

  • "...my Father which is in heaven." {Matthew 10:32}

  • "...my Father which is in heaven." {Matthew 10:33}

  • "...my Father which is in heaven." {Matthew 18:10}

  • "Our Father which art in heaven..." {Matthew 6:9}

  • "Our Father which art in heaven..." {Luke 11:2}

  • "Everything lovely and attractive was theirs to enjoy, and everything seemed wisely adapted to their wants; and that which they prized above all other blessings, was the society of the Son of God and the heavenly angels, for they had much to relate to them at every visit, of their new discoveries of the beauties of nature in their lovely Eden home, and they had many questions to ask relative to many things which they could but indistinctly comprehend." {Story of Redemption 29.2}

Misinterpreted Ellen White Quote that is used to support Adam seeing the Father face to face:

The holy pair were not only children under the fatherly care of God but students receiving instruction from the all-wise Creator. They were visited by angels, and were granted communion with their Maker, with no obscuring veil between." {Patriarchs and Prophets 50.3}

  • Two Questions arises from this quote which will be answered below: 1) What does communion with their maker look like? 2) What does no obscuring veil between mean?

  • Answer to 1): "that true happiness is found, not in the indulgence of pride and luxury, but in communion with God through His created works." {Patriarchs and Prophets 50.3}.

  • Answer to 2): "Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away." {2 Corinthians 3:16} "Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?" {John 14:9}

  • Conclusion: In communion with the Son of God, which is the beginning of the creation of God, the vail is removed and the holy pair had communion with God.

Who can see God?

Angels. And Men, when we are made equal to the angels and when our corruptible body is put on incorruption.

  • "Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven." {Matthew 18:10}

  • "For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven." {Matthew 22:30}

  • "Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection." {Luke 20:36}

  • "And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads." {Revelation 22:4}
